history

The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the departments as part of what was then the "Sarrebourg district" and initially circumscribed the municipalities of Berling, Danne-et-Quatre-Vents, Dannelbourg, Hangeviller, Henridorff, Kourtzrode, Lutzelbourg, Mittelbronn, Phalsbourg, Valtembourg, Vescheim, Vilsberg, Vintersbourg, Zilling. In 1800 the towns of the then dissolved canton of Lixheim were added: Bickenholtz, Bourscheid, Brouviller, Fleisheim, Hellering, Hérange, Hilbesheim, Lixheim, Metting, Oberstinzel, Sareck, Sarraltroff, Schalbach and Veckersviller. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, the number of communes rose to 56 in 2015. All 18 communes of the previous canton of Lorquin and 12 of the previous 23 communes of the canton of Sarrebourg were added to the previous 26 communes .

The change in electoral law to the Conseil départemental in 2014 made it necessary to re-classify and reduce the number of cantons. In the Arrondissement of Sarrebourg there were still 2 of 5 cantons (Sarrebourg and Phalsbourg), while all the communes of the canton Lorquin and from the previous canton of Sarrebourg the southeastern communes of Barchain, Brouderdorff, Harreberg, Hartzviller, Hesse, Hommert, Niderviller, Plain-de-Walsch, Schneckenbusch, Troisfontaines, Walscheid and Xouaxange.
