history

The canton that emerged after the French Revolution was ceded to the German Empire in 1871 as a result of the Franco-Prussian War in the Peace of Frankfurt .

Through renegotiations, France got the municipality of Igney and the southern part of the municipality of Avricourt back in October 1871. The latter became an independent municipality and, together with Igney, was added to the neighboring canton of Blâmont in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department .

After Lorraine fell back to France through the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 , the canton of Réchicourt-le-Château was restored without the communes of Igney and Avricourt (Meurthe-et-Moselle) , which remained in the canton of Blâmont.
