The Catholic parish church of St. Lambert is a listed church building in Bechtheim .

history

inner space

The church consecrated to Lambert von Liège originally belonged to the Principality of Liège , which gave the Canons of Liège the right to occupy the parish in Bechtheim. Until the time of the Reformation , the pastors were provided by Liège.

The size of the church suggests that it was used as a pilgrimage church. The place is located on a former pilgrim path that ran from Speyer and Worms towards Bingen .

The building, built in the style of the Worms school , is based on the St. Andrew's Church in Worms . The foundation building from the first half of the 11th century was a three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica with five arcades and a flat ceiling. Six steps lead up from the nave to the square choir in the east .

During the second construction period around the middle of the 12th century, a new square was added to the old choir square. The sides of the old choir were broken through with two arcades each ; so the former apse arch became the triumphal arch . In the same construction phase, the tower vestibule was vaulted, the walls of the nave were built higher, the aisles pulled forward and new windows were created. The outer walls of the nave and the choir were redesigned around 1200 with arched friezes and pilaster strips . In 1979 the Windesheim organ building workshop in Oberlinger installed a mechanical swallow's nest organ in the nave . The organ is set back and, with its small depth, fits very harmoniously into the Romanesque building.

tower

tower

The square tower in front in the west was built in the first half of the 12th century and partially renewed in 1570.

Gallery crypt

Remains of Gothic wall paintings can be seen in the so-called tunnel crypt, an arched corridor below the chancel. The corridor was probably originally a processional corridor. A reliquary probably once stood on the stage in the corridor.

graveyard

Originally the church stood on a fortified cemetery, forming with it a fortified church . Fragments of the fortifications are still there, as are baroque tombstones.

Simultaneous church

From around 1700 the basilica was a simultaneous church for Protestant and Catholic believers. A large iron grating separated the Lutheran from the Catholic part of the church, and the Catholics celebrated their services in the high choir.
