Johann Hermann Baas (born October 24, 1838 in Bechtheim ; † November 10, 1909 in Worms ) was a German doctor.

Live and act

Johann Hermann Baas came from an originally Dutch family who had emigrated to Germany in the mid-17th century. His father Adam Baas (1812-1883) was a farmer from Bechtheim. His mother Catharina (approx. 1810-1893) was the daughter of Hermann Cotheimer from Hessloch and Christina Beckerle. The paternal grandparents were Heinrich Baas and Catharina Weber from Oberhilbersheim . Baas himself married Amalie Daudt (1842–1922). The son Karl Baas came from this marriage .

From 1860, Baas practiced as a doctor and ophthalmologist in several towns in Rheinhessen and participated in the expansion of physical diagnostics. His "Outline of the History of Medicine and the Healing State", which appeared in 1876 and appeared in English in 1889, made him known. It was extensive work that helped practitioners understand the history of medicine. With regard to historical assessment and expertise, the work is not considered to be consistently reliable.
