Karl Baas

Karl Baas (born August 20, 1866 in Heßloch ; † October 6, 1944 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German medical historian and ophthalmologist (also as a university professor).

Career

The son of the doctor and well-known medical historian Johann Hermann Baas went to high school in Worms and then attended universities in Heidelberg, Zurich and Freiburg im Breisgau. In Freiburg he received his doctorate in 1890. med. with a contribution to the breakdown of acid esters in the intestine . He devoted his other professional activity to ophthalmology. In 1891 he became an assistant at the eye clinic in Freiburg, and in 1893 he completed his habilitation in ophthalmology . In 1898 he was appointed associate professor. In 1906 he moved to Karlsruhe , where he took over the management of the eye department at the Vincentiushaus. He worked there until 1935 and spent his twilight years in Freiburg.

Between 1890 and 1904, Baas submitted 36 specialist medical articles, but his lasting importance lies in his more than 50 medical-historical works. In the words of Paul Diepgen, he was “a very thorough researcher of sources and must be counted among the best editors of medieval medicine”. His focus was the research of the regional and especially urban medical history of the Lake Constance area, the Upper and Middle Rhine in the Middle Ages, whereby he gathered a lot of material on academic doctors.
