The Gau Odernheim – Osthofen railway was a branch line from Gau-Odernheim to Osthofen .

Geographical location

The line was in Rheinhessen and connected the Gau-Odernheim station on the Alzey – Bodenheim line and Osthofen station on the Mainz – Mannheim line .

history

Working at Dittelsheim-Heßloch

The construction of the line was started by the Hessian Ludwig Railway , which became part of the Prussian-Hessian Railway Association on April 1, 1897 . The line was opened on May 17, 1897. On February 10, 1914, “as darkness fell”, new “double light pre-signals were put into operation along the entire route , which corresponded to the shape signal model that is still in use today .

Passenger traffic was shut down on September 29, 1974. Freight traffic followed in sections. Most recently, the route was only used in autumn and winter during the beet campaign . Freight traffic from Dittelsheim-Heßloch-Monzernheim was discontinued on April 1, 1976, Monzernheim-Bechtheim on May 27, 1983, Bechtheim-Osthofen on December 31, 1985. From February 28, 1990, none drove between Hillesheim-Dorndürkheim and Dittelsheim-Heßloch More freight trains, and on December 31, 1992 the remaining traffic between Gau-Odernheim and Hillesheim-Dorndürkheim was also stopped. The line was dismantled in 1998.

Planned reuse

The community of Gau-Odernheim planned to create a cycle path on the former section to Hillesheim. This failed, however, after an investigation report found a biotope with lizards on the former railway line . The alternative of expanding a parallel economic route, however, could not be financed. In the meantime, a cycle path on farm roads between Gau-Odernheim and Hillesheim has been implemented.
