Emil Fritz (born March 25, 1877 in Bühl (Baden) ; † July 25, 1954 in Bremen ) was a German restaurateur and variety owner.

biography

Fritz was the son of a hatter. In his youth he lived briefly in the USA , had various jobs before he became a seaman and was employed by the Imperial Navy from 1897 to 1899 . In 1900 he moved to Bremen and worked as a waiter. In 1903 he opened Café Fritz at the Bremen harbor. From 1904 to 1908 he ran the Café Française on Hafenstrasse in Bremen .

In 1908 Fritz leased a restaurant with a variety concession in Katharinenstrasse, which he converted. On September 5, 1908, he opened the variety theater called " Astoria ". By 1929 he expanded the business to include several lounges and a hall, and he developed the vaudeville into a well-known national address. Stars like Claire Waldoff and Otto Reutter appeared.

In 1914 he also took over the Café Roland in Bonehauerstraße and converted it into Café Atlantic as a concert café and cabaret.

In World War II, both houses were destroyed. Fritz rebuilt the destroyed company and opened the Varieté in 1950. The good reputation was quickly restored and stars such as Zarah Leander , Marika Rökk , Heinz Erhardt and Trude Herr as well as Udo Jürgens appeared among others. a. on.

His son Wolfgang Fritz and his stepmother Elisabeth Fritz continued the business from 1954 to 1959. Elisabeth Fritz continued to run the Astoria until 1967/68 and then sold the property to Beck's brewery.
