Gyruss is a shoot-'em-up - arcade game , which by the Japanese game company Konami has developed and published the 1,983th In the USA, the game was distributed by the Centuri company . The game has similarities with Tempest and Galaga . The game takes three different microprocessors : two Z80 microprocessor and a 6809 plus an Intel 8039 - microcontroller . Five AY-3-8910- PSG sound chips and a DAC were used for the sound .

Game description

The gameplay is similar to that of Galaga. The player controls a spaceship and tries to shoot down formations of different enemy spaceships. Unlike in the game Space Invaders , individual opponents break away from this formation and approach the player's spaceship.

The presentation is similar to that of the game Tempest. A simple 3D effect is achieved by depicting the game using an imaginary cylinder . The player's gaze is directed into this cylinder. The spaceship can move around the outermost line of the base. Another game that works with a similar effect is BlockOut as a 3D implementation of Tetris .

Unusually for games with a 3D effect at this time, Gyruss is no longer represented with a vector (see Tempest), but with raster graphics .

The game consists of 24 levels , six of which represent a bonus round. Four levels each describe a journey to the planets Neptune , Uranus , Saturn , Jupiter , Mars and Earth . Interestingly, the actually first level, the first partial flight to Neptune, represents the last level in the game. In contrast to other endless games, the game receives a reference to the repetition of the entire game that can be perceived by the player.

A synthesizer version of the Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 was chosen for the soundtrack . This is based on a cover version and hit single by the band Sky , which was released in 1980. Playing the music in stereo is also unusual for arcade games in the early 80s .

Ports

The game was released in 1984 for Atari 800 , Atari 2600 , Atari 5200 , C64 and ColecoVision . A slightly modified version for NES followed in 1988 . In addition, Gyruss is included in various game collections of older arcade games: Examples are Konami Arcade Classics for PlayStation and Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advanced for Game Boy Advance . Since April 18, 2007, the game is also available as an arcade title for the Xbox 360 is available on the Xbox Live Marketplace for 400 Points.
