Hans Schneider (Antiquarian)

Hans Schneider (born February 23, 1921 in Eichstätt ; † April 9, 2017 in Tutzing ) was a German antiquarian and music publisher .

Life

Hans Schneider studied piano in Munich and Innsbruck and as a private student of Elly Ney . In 1949 he founded the music antiquarian shop in Tutzing, which has existed since then, and since 1958 he has also been active as a music writer and music publisher and sometimes worked in this role as a patron .

More than 1200 publications have appeared in his publishing house, including important studies on music publishing and facsimiles and reprints of essential sources on the history of publishing and music. However, the publishing house was closed in 2015 because the increasingly low funding for musicology at German universities meant that the demand for scientific publications had fallen at a high level.

Honors

Schneider was an honorary doctor of the Universities of Eichstätt and Mainz , and commemorative publications were published on his 60th, 65th and 70th birthday . In 1980 he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Bavarian Order of Merit.
