Klaus Wolfgang Niemöller

Klaus Wolfgang Niemöller (born July 21, 1929 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German musicologist .

Life

Klaus Wolfgang Niemöller studied musicology at the University of Cologne from 1950 to 1955 . This was followed by his doctorate with the dissertation Nicolaus Wollick (1480–1541) and his music tract and in 1964 his habilitation with studies on music care and music teaching at German Latin schools from the end of the Middle Ages to around 1600 . In 1969 he was appointed professor.

From 1975 to 1983 Niemöller was director of the musicological seminar at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and from 1983 to 1994 director of the musicological institute at the University of Cologne. Niemöller was chairman of the Joseph Haydn Institute in Cologne and the Robert Schumann Research Center in Düsseldorf as well as president of the Society for Music Research .

Klaus Wolfgang Niemöller has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1976 .

Main areas of work are music theory and music maintenance from the Middle Ages to around 1600, music history of the 19th and 20th centuries, German music traditions in Eastern Europe and interdisciplinary approaches.
