Richard Hellmuth Baum (born April 8, 1902 in Esslingen am Neckar , † September 6, 2000 in Kassel ) was a German musicologist and music historian .

Life

Family and education

The Evangelical baptized Richard Baum, son of the businessman in 1920 Wilhelm Baum and his spouse Klara born Schweitzer put, the Abitur at grammar school from Esslingen am Neckar. Richard Baum married Margarete nee Burrey in 1936. A child came from this connection. He died in September 2000 at the old age of 98 in Kassel.

Professional background

Immediately after completing his doctorate, Richard Baum took up the position as the first editor at Bärenreiter-Verlag in Augsburg , who moved to Kassel in 1927. The later appointed editor-in-chief worked for this publishing house until his formal retirement in 1971. Richard Baum acted from 1933 to 1977 as first chairman of the Working Group for House Music (AfH), since 1969 the International Working Group for Music (IAM). In this function he was responsible for the Kassel Music Days, which have taken place annually from 1933 to 1937 and since 1950. Richard Baum was the editor of the magazines Musik und Kirche (1929–1941) and Hausmusik (since 1933, later Practica). From 1962 to 1977 he was co-editor of Musica magazine.

Baum, whose commitment applied to several committees for musical youth and adult education, also worked from 1947 to 1977 as treasurer of the Society for Music Research and from 1955 to 1975 as first chairman of the Landgraf Moritz Foundation. In recognition of his special services to music research, he was awarded the plaque of honor of the city of Kassel in 1962 and the Goethe plaque of the state of Hesse in 1976.
