Frieder Zschoch (born March 30, 1932 in Großenhain ; † March 3, 2016 in Leipzig ) was a German musicologist .

Life

Frieder Zschoch was born as the second son of the Evangelical Lutheran pastor Reinhold Zschoch and his wife Hildegard in Großenhain. He grew up in a musical family and received piano and trumpet lessons. In the fall semester of 1950, he enrolled at the University of Leipzig for musicology.

His teachers there were Walter Serauky, Hellmuth Christian Wolff, Richard Petzoldt and Rudolf Eller , he also studied German from 1950 to 1952 and was a guest student at the Humboldt University in Berlin with Hans-Heinz Dräger for systematic musicology. In May 1954 he passed the state examination for musicology in Leipzig.

He wrote his diploma thesis on the subject of the use of the trumpet in operas and symphonies of the Baroque era, with special emphasis on Georg Friedrich Handel .

After completing his studies, he initially worked for VEB Friedrich Hofmeister Verlag Leipzig and for the art union, before he became assistant lecturer at VEB Deutscher Verlag für Musik (DVfM), which was founded on January 1st, 1954 . This publisher specialized in a. on total edition projects ( Bach , Handel , Mozart ) in cooperation with the Bärenreiter-Verlag in Kassel.

On January 1, 1955, Frieder Zschoch was employed as a permanent editor and was responsible for the first volume of the Halle Handel Edition (HHA).

Frieder Zschoch belongs to the group of thirteen Handelians who founded the Georg Friedrich Handel Society on April 23, 1955. The signatures on the deed of incorporation include a. those of Max Schneider , Rudolf Steglich , Karl Vötterle , Georg Engelmann , Walther Siegmund-Schultze , Wolfgang Rehm , Konrad Sasse and Arno Rammelt .

Frieder Zschoch remained firmly connected to the Georg Friedrich Handel Society and the Halle Handel Edition. As a lecturer, he not only accompanied numerous volumes of the Bach, Handel and Telemann editions, but also the four-volume Handel manual. In GDR times he was the link between DVfM and Bärenreiter-Verlag. After the reunification he moved to Bärenreiter-Verlag in Kassel in 1990, until he retired in 2002.

Frieder Zschoch was a long time member of the Board of Directors of the Handel Society and was made an honorary member in 2003. He is also an honorary member of the Society for Music Research.
