About this picture

Boffzen is a municipality on the Weser in the Holzminden district in southern Lower Saxony ( Germany ) and the seat of the Boffzen municipality of the same name for the municipalities of Fürstenberg , Lauenförde and Derental .

Geographical location

Boffzen is located on the western edge of the Solling low mountain range east of the Weser between the North Rhine-Westphalian towns of Höxter in the north and Beverungen in the south. The Rottmünde flows into the Weser in Boffzen.

history

middle Ages

Boffzen was first mentioned in a document under the name Boffeshus in the Corveyer traditions . A land donation is recorded there in Latin. Translated it says: "It gave Adalbod a hoof for the salvation of his brother Swyricdac in Boffeshus ".

The name Boffzen is one of the patronymic place names and means "settlement of Boffi". The -hausen type is a common educational element of early medieval settlement names in the Low German language area. The name Boffi is not unknown. The most famous bearer of this name is Abbot Bovo I von Corvey (879-890). He was the nepos of Abbot Warin I (Corvey) . Unfortunately, the term nepos is ambiguous. In this context, a deserted area in Essezen is interesting. It is very likely based on a name for an Asic / Esic. A comes Beffo who died around 855 is said to have been the brother of this Asic. A well-known Asig (Esikonen) was comes in Hessengau . This Asic / Asig was married to Ida the Younger, probably a daughter of dux Ekbert (Saxony) , in his second marriage . It is therefore not unlikely that the places Boffzen and Essezen go back to the same Asic and his brother Beffo or to the abbot Bovo I. The similarity of names between Beffo and Bovo makes it plausible that they were related, most likely through Ida the Younger and Asic. Bovo I would also be Warin's nephew “nepos”.

The von Boffessen family of knights and ministers was first mentioned in documents at the end of the 12th century. The landlords owned farms and lands in Maygadessen near Godelheim , in Bosseborn and in Höxter . Konrad von Boffessen took part in the 5th crusade to the Holy Land. In the 15th century, the aristocratic family experienced social decline. Knights were no longer in demand at a time when firearms and the mercenary system were becoming established. The trace of the von Boffessen family is finally lost in the 18th century.

In the Middle Ages there was a Weser island opposite Boffzen, mentioned in 1375.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Boffzen
Blazon : “Split by a silver (white) wavy thread of red and blue. In front two silver (white), gold (yellow) inseminated roses and two golden (yellow) bars, behind three golden (yellow) ears, covered with a silver (white) wine glass adorned with seven green knobs. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The colors of the coat of arms remind of the former affiliation to the Corvey monastery . The roses come from the coat of arms of the local lords of Boffessen. The wavy thread symbolizes the Weser , the ears of wheat stand for agriculture and the wine glass for the decades-long local glass industry.
