history
On January 1, 1973, in the course of the regional reform in Lower Saxony, the joint municipality of Boffzen was founded. The regional reform was viewed critically by the municipalities in advance. Meinbrexen, Fürstenberg, Lauenförde, Derental and Boffzen wanted to merge, but with the acquisition of Neuhaus im Solling and Silberborn, as was proposed in 1971. Neuhaus and Silberborn, however, came to the town of Holzminden. Initially, the name and seat of the new joint municipality remained controversial. In Lauenförde, which until then belonged to the Northeim district, they did not really want to put up with Boffzen as the seat and municipality name and suggested the name “Samtgemeinde Schloßberg” as a compromise. Boffzen in turn offered the alternative name "Samtgemeinde Sollingtor". In the votes in the individual municipal councils, the name "Samtgemeinde Boffzen" prevailed.
In December 1996 there were 7,986 residents in the municipality.
According to an expert opinion, the administration has been planning a possible conversion of the joint municipality into a single municipality since 2008 in order to enable savings of around 125,000 euros per year. For this, the existing member communities of Derental, Boffzen, Fürstenberg and Lauenförde would have to be dissolved and could then only form local councils or local heads with limited decision-making rights. In a referendum at the same time as the federal election on September 27, 2009, the citizens of Lauenförde, including Meinbrexen, voted 63.91 percent against a unified community with neighboring communities.
