history
Ottenstein Castle and the Flecken were first mentioned in a document in 1182; They were apparently founded by Otto VIII von Everstein . Under the protection of the castle, the influx and the planned relocation from the villages of Hattensen and Bergfelde began. In 1701, under Hilmar von Mansberg, the castle was torn down and a half-timbered house was built, which was used as a district court until 1929. In September 1976 this house was also torn down and a bungalow was built over the vaulted cellar.
In the spring of 1571 the old Marienkirche burned down and was completely destroyed. From 1601 to 1610 a new Liebfrauenkirche (parish church of Our Lady) was built. In 1662 the town had six annual markets. 1791 is said to have taken place in the chapel of Hattensen (today used as the cemetery chapel of Ottenstein) the secret, later annulled marriage of Caroline von Linsingen to Prince William of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1910 a memorial stone was erected on the village pond and a street was named after Major Georg Ludwig Korfes , who was born in the village .
In 1996, 1401 people lived in the municipality. In 2001 Ottenstein received the gold medal at federal level in the competition Our village should be more beautiful - our village has a future . Until the end of 2010, Ottenstein was a state-recognized resort .

coat of arms
Blazon : "In red a silver chapel with a pointed tower in side view, backed by an upright golden branch with golden leaves and silver fruits". In the 15th century, the settlement, which was built around the former Ottenstein Castle, became the official seat and patch in the 15th century. The coat of arms shows the cemetery chapel of the former parish of the office, at the same time it was the parish church of the mountain village of Hattensen, which was destroyed in 1406 in the meantime, until 1601 . It is significant in terms of art history due to its Romanesque vault construction . The leafy branch heraldically symbolizes the old cherry plantations of the community, the colors red and gold are based on the lion's coat of arms of the Guelphs . Ottenstein's coat of arms was approved in 1962.
Economy and Infrastructure
Ottenstein has a demographic problem in view of its not very convenient location, low population density, people moving away and aging. This is to be counteracted by giving away building land (a total of one hectare).
