The Warendorfer Bahn is a single-track branch line from Münster via Warendorf to Rheda-Wiedenbrück . Today it is operated with a connection to Bielefeld and Rahden . It is a section of the former railway line Münster - Rheda - Lippstadt . Today the route is part of the DB regional network Münster-Ostwestfalen (MOW) based in Münster. According to Deutsche Bahn, it is the most accident-prone railway line in Germany. This has to do with the fact that numerous level crossings on the railway line, which mostly runs directly next to Bundesstrasse 64, are not technically secured, so that the train often announces itself with a signal, which resulted in the nickname Pängel Anton .

history

General

Memorial stone 100 years Warendorfer Bahn between Müssingen and Warendorf
Telgte station

After plans for a narrow-gauge railway from Münster to Telgte had initially existed, a line from Münster via Warendorf and Rheda to Lippstadt was built as a full- gauge railway . On February 8, 1886, the train service between Münster and Warendorf started, in 1887 the Warendorfer Bahn went into operation to Rheda.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn wanted to shut down the line in the Warendorf - Rheda-Wiedenbrück section due to inefficiency.

Until the 2013/14 timetable change, the route was served by the NordWestBahn , and the Eurobahn has been running since then .

Rhedaer Bahn

The “Rhedaer Bahn” is the name given to the route from Rheda via Wiedenbrück , Langenberg and Bad Waldliesborn to Lippstadt. On November 30, 1979, the last passenger train ran here. Freight traffic between Langenberg and Lippstadt ceased on June 16, 1983. The track has been dismantled since 1985. On November 30, 1995 the Wiedenbrück Süd - Langenberg section was closed (freight traffic until December 1, 1994), and the remainder followed on May 1, 2001 (goods traffic until December 31, 2000). Since 2006, the Westfälische Localbahn has been trying to reactivate the route as a museum railway , although the deedication notice of the exemption from railway operations is available from the Federal Railway Authority. The city of Rheda-Wiedenbrück has been building a cycle path on the old route since 2009 . After various level crossings in Wiedenbrück had been dismantled a long time ago, in the spring of 2009, as part of the renovation of a street in Rheda, a crossing option for this cycle path was created in place of the previous level crossing. The second level crossing in Rheda and the track throughout the city were dismantled in summer 2009.

route

Much of the route runs along federal highway 64 . In all through-passages, the railway line swings away from the road, except in Clarholz , where it also runs alongside the road in the village. A large number of mostly unrestricted level crossings is the reason for the low line speed of a maximum of 60 km / h. Shortly before the Rheda-Wiedenbrück train station, the Warendorfer Bahn crosses under the Hamm – Minden railway line and does not connect to the passenger tracks, but to the freight tracks with its own platform - so the Warendorfer Bahn could be threaded into the main line without crossing at the same level.

With the 2006/07 timetable, the line speed between Warendorf and Beelen was increased to 100 km / h. This required numerous modifications to the route and the removal or technical protection of numerous level crossings. At the same time, the Vohren stop , which was previously only served by a morning train, was closed. This measure made it possible to introduce an hourly service on the line south of Warendorf. Previously, the trains between Warendorf and Bielefeld only ran every two hours.

In October 2009, the section between Münster and Warendorf was partially renewed and the section between Münster and Beelen was connected to the electronic interlocking in Coesfeld station , the Beelen - Rheda section will follow later. From here the complete operational management takes place, which makes the use of individual dispatchers , point and barrier keepers superfluous. In the course of this, the outdated mechanical technology was dismantled in the Telgte, Warendorf and Beelen stations.

At the end of August 2011, further parts of the tracks and the ballast bed between Münster and Warendorf were completely renewed: An approx. 1 km long section extends from the Rochus-Hospital to Telgte station, another approx. 5 km long section from Raestrup to Level crossing at the Allendorf restaurant.

Construction work in the next few years is planned to relocate the Raestrup-Everswinkel stop to Müssingen and to increase the speed of the line between Münster and Telgte by securing three more important level crossings and closing 22 small ones. According to the plans, the three technically fully secured level crossings are to be built at the confluence of the new K 50n district road (at Haus Droste), at the Blanke / Delsener Heide confluence and at the intersection with 19 district road in Raestrup. In December 2016, the Warendorf-Eine / Müssingen stop was completed in Raestrup, thereby closing the Raestrup-Everswinkel station. In the area of the stop, the tracks must then be re-routed in order to create sufficient space for the new level crossing system. In addition, the unsecured level crossings between Beelen and Clarholz are to be lifted.

Planning

The Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe has tried in vain to finance the expansion of the route via the public transport requirement plan of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Specifically, it is about an increase in speed from currently 60 km / h to 100 km / h in places. For this purpose, level crossings must be closed or technically secured. This measure is intended to reduce the travel time between the regional centers of Bielefeld and Münster over the route from currently approx. 90 minutes to 70 minutes, making the RB 67 direct line faster than the detour connections via Hamm. The acceleration means that one cycle can be saved in the basic cycle and a half-hour cycle can be introduced between Münster and Warendorf. The measure is to be implemented by 2025. In the process, 27 unrestricted level crossings between Münster and Rheda-Wiedenbrück are technically secured and a further 27 crossings opened.

In November 2019, the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe presented the concept of a possible S-Bahn Münsterland. This provides for a half-hourly S-Bahn between Münster and Warendorf for the route, which, compared to the current regional train line, also stops at a new station, Münster Danziger Freiheit. The S-Bahn line should continue to run to Bielefeld every hour. In addition to the S-Bahn line, an hourly RE line Münster - Bielefeld is planned, which only stops in Telgte, Warendorf, Beelen, Rheda-Wiedenbrück and Gütersloh on the way. The project requires three additional meeting sections, a speed increase to 120 km / h, a train cover signal in Münster Hauptbahnhof and additional platforms in Gütersloh and Isselhorst-Avenwedde.

offer

The Warendorfer Bahn is served hourly by the regional train RB 67 "Der Warendorfer" from Münster to Bielefeld. In Bielefeld, the line is connected to the regional train RB 71 “Ravensberger Bahn” to Rahden. Passengers do not have to change trains in Bielefeld in this relation.

NordWestBahn train at Raestrup-Everswinkel

The crossings take place in Beelen and, at hourly, in Telgte. Since the symmetry time of the timetable is about three minutes later than usual, the connection to the Sennebahn in the direction of Paderborn is missed in Brackwede . The hourly cycle for the entire route was introduced for the first time with the 2006/07 timetable. Previously, the section between Warendorf and Rheda-Wiedenbrück was mostly served every two hours, between Münster and Warendorf an hourly service was already offered. The prerequisite for this was to increase the line speed between Warendorf and Beelen from 60 km / h to 100 km / h. Overall, however, the line speeds are distributed very differently. Between Warendorf and Rheda, 100 km / h is usually permitted, while the 60 km / h between Münster and Warendorf is repeatedly interrupted by a few short 20 km / h sections, as there are accident-prone level crossings here. There are also such places on the eastern part.

The local rail passenger transport is carried out on behalf of the Verkehrsverbund OstWestfalenLippe and the Zweckverband SPNV Münsterland by the Eurobahn , which uses Bombardier Talent - railcars corresponding to the DB class 643. The average speed is 50 km / h.

Tariff

The Westphalian tariff applies to local public transport on the entire route . The NRW tariff would apply across the tariff area ; however, this regulation is not relevant for the route, as it only runs in the area of the Westphalian tariff.

Trivia

Due to the high number of traffic accident victims due to disregard of the traffic rules at level crossings, the line is also known colloquially as the "Westphalian killer".
