Culture and sights

Buildings

St. Bartholomew
  • The Church of St. Bartholomew bears the name of the sixth apostle, Bartholomew . It dates from the 11th to 12th centuries and is one of the oldest churches in the Münsterland that still stands on its old foundation walls. It was originally built in the Romanesque style. The single-nave church building was extended with a cross- vault transverse to the axis through a renovation in the 15th century . The high altar made of Baumberg limestone also dates from this time .
In 1739 the church was renovated, as indicated by a year on the church tower . In 1855 the church got the first organ from the Pohlmann company from Warendorf.
In 1939 the church was extensively renovated according to the plans of the Warendorf artist Josef Brandkamp. The high altar was moved and a Way of the Cross, the first work of the artist Johannes Wehrenberg from Münster, was acquired. Warm air heating was also installed in the church. The altar and the renovated church were consecrated on October 15, 1939.
In 1952 the old organ, which had been badly damaged by the renovation of the church, was replaced. On November 19, 1952, the new organ from the Klingenhegel company from Münster was consecrated. Since this organ was made of poor material and it was exposed to significant temperature fluctuations, it had to be replaced in 1979 by an electronic makeshift organ.
In 1978 plans began for a new building or extension, as the old church had become too small. Construction began on June 4, 1981. The church stands on 90 concrete piles and now has approx. 320 seats and was built directly onto the old church. On December 11, 1983, it was inaugurated by the Bishop of Münster, Reinhard Lettmann . In the altar are relics (remains of bones) of Saint Ida von Herzfeld .
