Alois Schröer

Alois Schröer (born March 27, 1907 in one , † February 17, 2002 in Münster ) was a German Catholic priest , honorary cathedral capitular in Münster and researcher of Westphalian church history.

Life

Alois Schröer was born on March 27, 1907 in Eine, today part of Warendorf . He graduated from high school in 1927 at Laurentianum Warendorf .

After studying theology in Münster, he was ordained a priest on December 17, 1932 in St. Paulus Cathedral in Münster by Auxiliary Bishop Johannes Scheifes .

Schröer received his first pastoral employment in 1933 in the community of Gescher in the deanery of Borken, initially as a cooperator, from 1934 as a vicar. In 1937 he was appointed to Münster.

At the beginning of 1938 Schröer received from Bishop Clemens August Graf von Galen the order to process the history of the clergy of the diocese of Münster, a Necrologium Monasteriense about all previous clerics and priests of the diocese should be drawn up. As head of the “Episcopal Diocesan Archives” established for this purpose in 1936, Schröer began with this task with a team of employees. The project was delayed by World War II . It was not until 1943, he was together with Heinrich Börsting the manual of the diocese of Muenster publish the first edition and this also won only his second edition in 1946 its real meaning.

On April 5, 1944, Schröer also became vicar of the cathedral . In March 1958 he was given a teaching position for church history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, and from 1961 he became an honorary professor until he retired in 1973. For many years until his death, Alois Schröer headed the Middle Ages / Modern Age department of the Institute for Religious Folklore in Münster.

From October 20, 1954, Schröer was a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . On April 3, 1984 he was made an honorary member.

Schröer died on February 17, 2002 after a brief illness in Münster.
