In addition, Rüdiger Vollborn ( Bayer 04 Leverkusen ) was on call as the third goalkeeper. He should have moved up in the squad if one of the two goalkeepers had injured himself during the tournament.
German games
Host Germany met Italy , Denmark and Spain in the preliminary round . After an initially weak performance against the Italians, the team was able to improve their performance and won the other two group games against Denmark and Spain. Due to the better goal difference, the hosts were group first before Italy.
