Marolterode is a municipality in the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia . The town of Nottertal-Heilinger Heights is the fulfilling municipality for Marolterode .

geography

Marolterode is located southeast of Schlotheim on Landesstraße 1027 at the northwest exit of the Schlotheimer Graben , which runs in the Heilinger Heights in the northwest of the Thuringian Basin .

history

In the local area of Marolterode, finds were found during excavations that already indicate a Germanic settlement. The town of Malterode itself was probably first mentioned around 1288. This number has not yet been precisely proven. On May 27, 1301 Marolterode was mentioned in the possessions of the Volkenroda monastery . According to a document from the 2nd calendar week in June 1305, Günther von Schwarzburg granted the Volkenroda monastery duty-free on the place.

Around 1580 the names “Marroda”, “Maroldishausen” or “Maroldshausen” appear in documents for the place. From 1690 the form Marolterode can be found. The name suggests a place that used to live from horse breeding, because the name of the place comes from the word "Marolt", a term for horse owners ("Moravia keeper").

The place changed hands several times over the centuries. Initially belonging to the territory of the Landgraves of Thuringia, it later passed to Elector Moritz von Sachsen , then to Count Heise von Lutterberg and finally into the possession of the monastery in Schlotheim. In 1753 Marolterode, also known as Marode, was a settlement for outpatient day laborers, pan-makers, broom-makers, scissors-grinders, kesslers and musicians. It is often described as a strong transit area for the Krummfingers-Balthasar band of robbers. The gang member, reported Hanns Georg Koch, called Zippelfleisch, lives in ailing. The place belonged to the Electoral Saxon Office Langensalza until 1815 and after its cession to Prussia from 1816 to 1944 to the district of Langensalza in the province of Saxony .

On 6./8. April 1945, US tanks were taken under fire by German assault guns. A long, loss-making battle developed. Twenty German casualties from April 8th were recovered by the villagers in the evening and later buried in a communal grave in the churchyard. During the fighting, the population was evacuated in Schlotheim for several days.

Blowout

In 1959, a gas test well resulted in a blowout with subsequent fire. First, on July 25, 1959, gas leaked from a test well. During the work to seal the borehole, it was ignited by a lightning strike on August 9, 1959, and the heat of the burning gas caused the derrick to collapse. Its debris hindered the extinguishing work and work on the closure of the bore and were not accessible due to the heat of the fire, so that they first had to be dismantled by shots from tank cannons and removed from the scene of the fire with ship anchors. Ultimately, the hole was closed with a blowout preventer after the fire had been extinguished with a “chemical process”. The fire brigade took this until 19 August 1959. The event was topic of the program lifesaver of MDR of 2 March 2017th
