history
In 785 the place was first mentioned as Varila . Other place names were Vergelaha, Varela, Great Vargel up to today's Großvargula. The Großvargula castle, which is surrounded by moats in the Unstrut loop , was mentioned in a document in 1281. The castle was built in 1727. Until the end of the 19th century, the buildings of the subsequent building were well preserved. The medieval gate still exists today.
The taverns of Vargula were named after the place and the castle . Their lineage died out in the mid-14th century. In 1323 their successors sold Großvargula to the Fulda monastery and in 1340 the place to the Teutonic Knight Order . The order of knights sold Großvargula to the city of Erfurt as early as 1385 , which in 1403 appointed an official for the place. Only Großvargula belonged to the Erfurt “Amt Vargula”, which was an exclave . The place was a Saxon fiefdom and was partially subordinate to the Electoral Saxon office of Langensalza . After the city of Erfurt lost its independence in 1664, Großvargula belonged to the Erfurt state of the Archdiocese of Mainz as part of its territory .
With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , the clerical area of the Erfurt state was dissolved and Prussia was annexed. In 1806 Großvargula was occupied by the French and incorporated into the Principality of Erfurt . After its dissolution, the place came back to Prussia in 1814 and in 1816 its district of Langensalza in the province of Saxony was incorporated , to which it belonged until 1944.
