Dünwald is a municipality in the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia . It was newly formed on January 1, 1994 from the formerly independent communities of Beberstedt , Hüpstedt (both belong to the historic Obereichsfeld ) and Zaunröden .

The municipality of Dünwald is located on the shell limestone plateau of the Dün on the northern edge of the Unstrut-Hainich district.

Municipal council

The council of the municipality of Dünwald consists of 14 councilors (2009: 12). The municipal council election on May 26, 2019 led to the following result:

On April 15, 2018, Mr. Frank Meyer (CDU) was elected honorary mayor with 93.4% of the valid votes.

Culture and sights

Museums

The local history museum was set up in the manor house, the oldest building in town (from 1582).

Parish Church of St. Martin

The new building of a previous church was inaugurated on June 28, 1740 after three years of construction by Auxiliary Bishop Christoph Ignatius von Gudenus. The high altar comes from the Protestant Kilianikirche Mühlhausen (1725) and was erected in Hüpstedt in 1984. A limestone sculpture of St. Martin is located in a niche above the main portal. It was made in 2002 by local artists Heinz Günther and Peter Svarel from Bratislava. In the years between 2000 and 2005, extensive renovation measures were carried out.

Towards the end of the Second World War , a mobile launch pad for V2 rockets was installed north of the road to Reifenstein / Leinefelde . More than 200 forced laborers from Holland and France , who were housed in a barrack camp near the shafts I and II , had to do the heaviest earthworks in the freezing cold.
