From 1242 to 1356 Sundhausen was the ancestral seat of the noble family of the same name, the von Sundhausen family . In 1312 the Marienkirche was first mentioned in the place. 1346 Sundhausen was subordinated to the office of Langensalza . In 1913, when the Langensalza-Kirchheilingen small railway went into operation, the neighboring village of Kirchheilingen was provided with a railway connection.
