history

The town was founded in the time before the fall of the Thuringian Empire. Nobody can say today when exactly the place was created. According to the research of the local chronicler Wolfgang Brauner, Kutzleben was created in the Old Thuringian period, i.e. before 531. The place name Kutzleben as well as the name of the noble family von Kutzleben is derived from the proper name Chuzzo and the term life and means “Hereditary farm of Chuzzo”. The term life always occurs in connection with proper names and means ancestral farm or seat of the respective first name bearer.

In written form, the name Kutzleben appears for the first time in the 8th century in the form of Cuceslebo in a document listing the place as the property of the Hersfeld Abbey . The place name has been modified over the centuries such as Cuuslebo, Cuczeleiden, Kottenleiber, Gozzenleber and Kutzenleibin . There are no connections between the place Kutzleben and the spelling Gottsleben and its modifications. The oldest mentions of the place Kutzleben can be found in two documents in the Jöchaburg Copialbuch in the State Archives in Rudolstadt from the years 1128 and 1174.

Until 1815 Kutzleben belonged to the Electoral Saxon office of Weißensee . The decisions of the Congress of Vienna he came to Prussia and in 1816 the district Weissensee in the administrative district of Erfurt the province of Saxony assigned to which he belonged until 1944th

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Lützensömmern was incorporated.

Community seal

Since the 1920s, the local seal has shown a large linden tree with the inscription "Gemeinde Kutzleben". On older documents there is a seal imprint showing two linden trees.

The oldest possessions

The name of Kutzleben appears for the first time in an Erfurt monastery document from 1120, in which Ritant de Cuczeleiben is mentioned as a witness. Since there was a Vogt at Kutzleben, the main estate at Kutzleben will have been a sovereign property as early as the 14th century. In addition to the main estate, there were also various smaller estates, some of which were owned by monasteries, others were owned by various noble families, or were in the hands of the Teutonic Order Commende Nägelstedt or the Johanniterordenshof existing at Kutzleben .

The medieval municipal constitution

An Erfurt monastery deed from 1359 provides an interesting look at the community constitution of the place and an indication of the ownership structure. The persons named in this deed may be regarded as the owners of independent settlements in the town and, as home citizens and the “College of Four”, formed the community council of the place, which was under the supervision of the sovereign bailiff and judge.
