Christoph Kindervater (* 1977 ) is a German politician ( non-party ). Until his resignation in February 2020, he was honorary mayor of the Sundhausen community in the Unstrut-Hainich district of Thuringia . After he had offered himself to the AfD , the CDU and the FDP , he ran at the suggestion of the AfD in the election of the Thuringian Prime Minister by the state parliament on February 5, 2020. Attention particularly attracted the child's father's candidacy in the third ballot, in which the AfD parliamentary group in the Thuringian state parliament, for the first time in the history of the German parliament, did not give its own candidate a vote despite the official nomination in order to support the candidacy of Thomas Kemmerich ( FDP ), who only then stood . The election of Kemmerich as prime minister on the basis of AfD votes triggered the government crisis in Thuringia in 2020 and was widely viewed by the public as a “ taboo break ” and as the first cooperation between bourgeois parties at state level with right-wing extremists since the Weimar Republic .

Activity as a local politician

Kindervater was elected honorary mayor of the Sundhausen community in a runoff election in June 2016 . In 2019 he ran on the CDU list for the district council of the Unstrut-Hainich district , but did not receive a seat.

Positions

Children father wrote as a comment to an online article by Henryk M. Broder for Holocaust Remembrance of a " Merkel - regime " and "regime media" and with reference to the current the Middle East policy of Germany: "Make them [Broder] not the same Mistakes like the media and historians and take the Germans into bondage for what this regime does. ”So it was not“ THE GERMANS ”who“ stood guard in Auschwitz . ”He confirmed to the MDR that the comment from come from him and he stands by his statements.

When the child father got involved in writing to the members of the CDU, the FDP and the AfD in early February 2020 for the candidacy for the office of Prime Minister in Thuringia, he described himself as a supporter of the Union of Values .

Candidate as Prime Minister of Thuringia

Ballots for the election of the Thuringian Prime Minister on February 5, 2020.

After the state elections in Thuringia in 2019 , the incumbent coalition of left, SPD and Greens lost its previous majority in the state parliament. Kindervater then offered himself in a letter to the state parties of the CDU, FDP and AfD as a candidate for the office of prime minister in order to prevent the re-election of Bodo Ramelow ( Die Linke ) at the head of a red-red-green minority government .

The prime ministerial election took place on February 5, 2020. The 22-strong AfD parliamentary group proposed child fathers. In the first ballot, Kindervater received 25 out of 90 votes, Ramelow 43 votes, with 22 abstentions. With this, Kindervater received at least three votes from the ranks of other parliamentary groups and for the first time a candidate proposed by the AfD was able to record votes from other parliamentary groups for the election of a prime minister. Albrecht Glaser had already succeeded in doing this in the 2017 election of the German Federal President .

In the second ballot, Kindervater only got 22 votes, which was exactly the number of AfD seats in the state parliament. In the third ballot, too, the AfD parliamentary group upheld its proposal for the child father. In addition, the FDP parliamentary group proposed, as previously announced for this case, its chairman Thomas Kemmerich . He was elected Prime Minister with 45 votes, as Ramelow only received 44 votes and one member abstained. Child father received zero votes in this ballot, although he was still the official candidate of the 22-member AfD parliamentary group. The Thuringian AfD parliamentary group was the first parliamentary group in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany to not give its own candidate for the office of prime minister a single vote in the decisive ballot. According to the minutes of the state parliament session, only the AfD parliamentary group reacted to the announcement of the election results with applause. The election of Kemmerich as Prime Minister, which was apparently made possible by the child's father even in the third ballot and which was therefore based on the AfD votes, triggered the government crisis in Thuringia in 2020 and was widely viewed by the German public as a " taboo break " respected because it was the first cooperation between bourgeois parties and right-wing extremists in a German state after the Nazi era .

Resignation as mayor

On February 6, 2020, Kindervater announced his resignation from the office of honorary mayor of Sundhausen, to which he had been elected in 2016 in order to “avert damage to the community” after the failed candidacy for prime minister. On February 7, 2020, an alderman of the Free Voters took over the office temporarily until a new mayor is elected.

Christoph Kindervater lives in Sundhausen and works as a sales engineer. He is married and has a son.
