The remains of Großvargula Castle are located in the municipality of Großvargula in the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia .

location

The remains of the castle are in the Unstrut loop and were once separated from the rest of the site by a moat . The Unstrut cycle path passes nearby.

History of the complex

Today there is only a simple building complex with the office building, a baroque building with a central projection from 1727. Only the gatehouse with a pointed arch barrel in the passage is of medieval origin. Older representations allow the possibility of a reconstruction:

The former site was flanked by four round corner towers; the drawbridge was still attached to the castle in 1856 . The dominant building was a mighty residential tower ( kemenate ) from the 15th century, which the city of Erfurt built. It was 19 meters long, 9 meters wide and had walls 4 meters thick and 12 meters high. It was followed by a parapet with a hipped roof and slits of light with few small windows. The ogival entrance gate was on the lowest floor, the other floors could be reached by stairs inside the wall. This residential tower was demolished in 1861 and the material was used to build a barn.

history

The office building ("Castle") Großvargula built on the castle grounds in 1727

The taverns of Vargula were ministerials of the Landgraves of Thuringia. Rudolf von Vargula is known in 1178. He was cupbearer of the Landgrave of Thuringia. The place was mentioned as early as 785. The castle was mentioned in a document in 1281.

After the defeat of Napoleon, Vargula came to Prussia and in 1816 was assigned to the Langensalza district. In 1816 the Lutterodt family acquired the Grossvargula castle and manor. In 1855/1856 the government councilor August Zachariae bought the Grossvargula manor and castle. In 1906 the estate was sold to the landowner Lange.

There is now a retirement home at this point in the castle .
