Veitsberg Castle

Castle Veitsberg is Outbound hilltop castle on the eponymous mountain near Veitsberg , a district of Wünschendorf / Elster in the district of Greiz in Thuringia .

history

974 is the founding year of the St. Vitus Church . The church was believed to be the center of a Burgward area . From here the bailiffs of Weida unfolded their sphere of influence. The west tower of the church is still defensive today. The elongated Vitusberg was settled earlier and during the Slavic settlement period. Therefore the castle had been in this place longer than it was stated.

location

The Vitusberg with its elongated ridge is in an excellent strategic position on the southern edge of the small valley basin around the current Wünschendorfer area. Below the mountain crossed from the hall room of the coming branch Salzstraße the north to Zeitz carrying connection. The Elsterfurt could easily be controlled from up there. Below the castle, the rivers Weida and Elster are said to have served six fords in close proximity to traffic.

The castle stood close to a steeply sloping valley edge and was south of the churchyard. Hollow roads are interpreted as the remains of a ditch. The church tower resembles a keep .
