Jan Balstad (born November 16, 1937 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian politician and trade unionist of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). From 1988 to 1989 he was his country's trade minister.

Life

Balstand completed his training as a lathe operator until 1959 . He then worked in this profession until 1968. From 1960 to 1961 he was the chairman of the youth organization Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF) in Oslo. In 1963 he missed a seat on the city council of the Norwegian capital. Between 1968 and 1981 he served as vice chairman of the Norwegian Iron and Metal Workers Association. In 1981 he became general secretary of the Landsorganisasjonen i Norge (LO) trade union federation .

On June 13, 1988, he was appointed Minister for Trade in the Brundtland II government. This post was based in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the time. Balstad held the post until the end of the government on October 16, 1989. He then returned to his post as general secretary at LO and became vice-chairman of the trade union confederation in 1997, which he remained until 2002.
