Geißendorf was a municipality in the Greiz district that was created in 1961 through the merger of Obergeißendorf and Untergeißendorf and was incorporated into the town of Berga / Elster in the Greiz district in Thuringia in 1991 .

The former districts of Geißendorf are located southeast of Berga and are connected to it via the district road 209, which leads from Berga via Untergeißendorf to Obergeißendorf. The Dorfbach stream flows through the former municipal area.
history
In January 1454 Obergeißendorf was first mentioned in a deed from Duke Friedrich of Saxony, Untergeißendorf was first mentioned in 1475 as "Niderngeissendorff". The founding documents for the villages have not been handed down, the first settlement probably took place before the 15th century. Historically, Obergeißendorf tended to Waltersdorf and Untergeißendorf to Markersdorf or Berga. In the Congress of Vienna in 1815, both places were subordinated to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach , which became part of the State of Thuringia in 1920. From 1952, the municipality belonged to the Greiz district in the Gera district of the GDR . On July 1, 1961, Upper and Lower Geissendorf were combined to form the municipality of Geissendorf. On June 1, 1991, it was incorporated into Berga / Elster.

In the originally purely rural villages, various trades have settled in the course of the centuries. Agriculture, which used to be the main line of business, only plays a subordinate role in comparison with the past.
