About this picture
View of the place from the east

Görkwitz is a municipality in the Lake District administrative community in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

geography

The community consists of the places Görkwitz and Mönchgrün . Both villages are about 2 km west of Schleiz. The corridors are heavily polluted by traffic on the route of the A9 federal motorway. For the villages, the bridges or underpasses compensate for the load somewhat.

geology

The soils around Schleiz also belong to the southeast Thuringian slate mountains , which have high-yield and reliable soils. In this surrounding area, the areas are not as exposed either.

history

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1250 and Mönchgrün on September 5, 1285. Despite their proximity to the town of Schleiz, Görkwitz and the hamlet of Mönchgrün are basically still real farming villages that have adapted to the development.

economy

As a result of the restructuring of agriculture in East Germany, the farmers found new ways after reunification and built u. a. their farms to holiday farms. Holidays in the countryside were made possible in Mönchgrün in particular.

The farmers founded agricultural cooperatives. Some farmers took back their land and ran it themselves.
