The hamlet Mönchgrün is a district of Görkwitz . Both settlements belong to the Lake District administrative community in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

Geography and geology

The hamlet of Mönchgrün, not far to the west, next to the motorway, is in the Schleiz region. Neighboring towns are the town of Schleiz and the villages of Oettersdorf and Grochwitz (zu Schleiz).

Geologically, the district also belongs to the south-east Thuringia slate mountains, which have high-yield and reliable soils.

history

Mönchgrün was first mentioned in a document on September 5, 1285.

Before agriculture was reorganized in the GDR, there were stable farms in the village. In the meantime, in addition to the agricultural work, holiday offers were found in the countryside for those seeking relaxation.

The helicopter crash on May 23, 2010 near Mönchgrün was a devastating event.

The Glücksmühle-Mönchgrün stop was on the Schleiz – Saalburg railway line . This has now been shut down.
