history
The place was first mentioned in a document on July 31, 1307. The Krobitz district was mentioned as early as 1074. In the 16th century, the fortified church dedicated to St. Nicholas was built, which was supposed to offer the inhabitants protection in the event of armed conflicts. In the 17th century, the flood-plagued town center could be drained by building a barrel vault as a sewer system.
In 1841 the Dutch windmill was built. In addition to the grain grinding aisle, she had a Lohe stamping mill since 1841. The company ran on wind until 1938 and then on diesel and electric drive until 1964. In 1864 the so-called “Prince's spruce” was planted in honor of the reign of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna .
In recent history, Weira's landscape has been shaped by the industrial fattening of the former pig breeding combine Neustadt / Orla, whose ammonia pollution caused considerable damage to nature and the environment. As the second largest industrial fattening facility in the GDR with around 180,000 pigs, the facility was in operation from 1978 to 1991 and mainly produced pork for export to the Federal Republic. Shortly before and after the end of the GDR, the citizens of Weira and the neighboring communities actively fought against the significantly reduced quality of life caused by the resulting faeces and made them the subject of the free and national press. In the period after 1990, the completely acidic forests were largely reforested by the Dürrbachgrund forestry management association. At the end of this reforestation, the former Thuringian Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel planted an oak tree at the edge of the path to the former local connection path towards Knau, next to which there is a memorial stone. The 106 m high, widely visible chimney of the former SZM's thermal power station was blown up on July 7, 2015.
