Neunhofen is a district of the town of Neustadt an der Orla in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

Geography and geology

If you came from the west, Neunhofen has always been a gateway to the town of Neustadt an der Orla. Both settlements are located in the Orlasenke , which borders the Saale-Orla sandstone slab to the north and the foothills of the southeast Thuringian slate mountains to the south . Alluvial soils close to the groundwater cover the undulated and ponds provided Orlatal and give it its character. At the transitions to the hills, the soils are remote from the groundwater.

The Saalfeld-Gera railway line and the 281 federal road with connection to the federal motorway 9 at Triptis run through the valley.

With the lines 820, 944 and 981 of the KomBus transport company , Neunhofen has connections to the core town of Neustadt an der Orla as well as to the towns of Schleiz , Stadtroda , Jena , Saalfeld (Saale) and Pößneck .

history

1071 was the first documentary mention of Neunhofen. In the 12th century, a predecessor of today's imposing, widely visible church was built by the Benedictines from Saalfeld . The monks also drained the Orlatal, created ponds and thus intensified agriculture.

Iron ore and copper were mined in the Neunhofer area until the 19th century .

On April 9, 1994, the community was incorporated into the city of Neustadt an der Orla.

Attractions

  • The church of Simon and Jude stands on a rock that slopes steeply in the east, south and west. In the north, the complex is separated from the ridge by a faintly visible neck ditch. The church dominates the entire area with its east tower. The cliff, sloping to the east and south, is protected by a high embankment wall along which today's road runs. The substructure of the tower and the nave were built in the first half of the 13th century and were later brought into their current form through various renovations and additions. The east choir was added later in place of the old apse. The renovation of the church after German reunification was also supported by the German Foundation for Monument Protection .
  • At the staircase to the church is a statue (relief) of Queen Richeza (995-1063), who is considered the founder of the church. She comes from the family of the Lorraine-Rhenish Ezzonen , married the Polish king and lived in Saalfeld after his death.
  • The churchyard is used as a cemetery. The inheritance of the von Wurmb-Lausnitz family is also located on it .

economy

The created and favorable natural site conditions were prerequisites for the flourishing local economy. From 1952 to 1960, the farmers had to follow the path of collectivization .
