Thomas Henry Ismay (born January 7, 1837 in Ropery House, Ellenborough, Maryport , Cumberland, † November 23, 1899 in Dawpool near Birkenhead) was a British shipowner .

Life

Ismay was born in Ropery House in 1837 as the eldest son of shipbuilder Joseph Ismay. At the age of 16 he began a commercial apprenticeship with the Liverpool ship brokerage company Imrie & Tomlinson, after which he went on a trip to South America . Back in Liverpool he worked in the Australian trade and as a ship broker, in the years up to 1863 together with the captain and ship owner Phillip Nelson. In 1867, Ismay acquired the company White Star Line, which was formerly active in liner services between Australia and Great Britain and later became extinct . Together with William Imrie, Ismay founded the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, which also traded in Australia and whose ships went to the United States from 1871. A remarkable relationship developed between Ismay and the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, which built all of the White Star Line's ships. In 1892, Ismay retired from active management of Ismay Imrie and Company and passed the presidency of the White Star Line to his son Joseph Bruce Ismay .

In November 1899 Thomas Ismay died in Dawpool after prolonged health problems. Ismay was married to Margaret Bruce from 1859 until his death and they had three sons and four daughters.
