history

The place name is of Slavic origin. The suffixes (word endings) in place names such as Moderwitz, Bad Klosterlausnitz, Bremsnitz ( -itz , -itsch, -witz , - (sch) ütz: from the Slavic -ic- or -ov-ic-) occur primarily in formerly Slavic settled Areas (since the 6th century ). Many, mostly Germanic tribes , used their, for themselves, typical endings. Therefore, many places today have the same suffix.

In the Middle Ages copper was mined around Moderwitz.

Moderwitz was incorporated into Neustadt an der Orla on July 1, 1950.

In October 2008 two buildings were demolished in order to gain more space for a central village square. The former consumption and a collapsing farmhouse with outbuildings have been dismantled. In February 2009 the former manor house of the manor, which was used as a school and residential building after the Second World War, was dismantled. The area of the adjacent cemetery was thus doubled. In December 2009, the new village square was used for the first time as the starting point for the annual hunt event. The public bakery previously planned by the city was not implemented at the request of Moderwitz.

This served as a secret passage to escape to Moderwitz when the castle was besieged.
  • Birthplace of geologist and ornithologist Prof. Dr. Karl Theodor Liebe in the center of the village. The former Protestant rectory has been privately owned since 2004. An inscription reminds of Karl Theodor Liebe.
