history

Volkmannsdorf was first mentioned in a document on February 22, 1366, it may have developed around a monastery of the Benedictine order, which ensured that the surrounding forest was reclaimed and thus the basis for settlement was created. During the development of the village it was renamed about four times, names included Folschensdorf , Volkersdorf and Folckensdorf . The place belonged to the Electoral Saxon Office Ziegenrück until 1815 and after its assignment, decided at the Congress of Vienna , came with the majority of the Neustädter Kreis to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach .

Volkmannsdorf was largely spared from the plague and during the world wars. The foot and mouth disease caused a quarantine that lasted several days. The once Gothic village church had to be rebuilt from scratch after a devastating fire. The large bell of the church was removed for war purposes during World War II, but came back intact after the end of the war and was used again during a restoration.
