Remda is a district of the city of Rudolstadt in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

The rest of the area around the district is characterized in the south by wooded red sandstone mountains and in the north by steeply rising Muschelkalk heights , which are separated from each other by the valley cut of the Remdaer Rinne. To the south of Remda, oak-rich deciduous trees with large populations of lilies of the valley and shadow flowers grow on red sandstone. The edges of the forest are adorned with horn-quail wheat, goldenrod, pechnelke, heather carnation, carnation as well as occasional large-flowered foxgloves and fox cuckoo flowers.

Geological feature

The Deube rises on the 461 meter high Galgenberg near Ehrenstein . Below Geilsdorf, the river seeps into the karst subsoil. Its water does not flow into the Ilm , but emerges again in the Remda area, about ten kilometers to the east, and flows from there into the Saale .

history

According to documented and archaeological sources, Remda is one of the oldest localities in East Thuringia. The existence of a Germanic-Slavic group settlement consisting of three hamlets tres villulae Remnidi in the 8th century emerges from property registers of the Fulda and Hersfeld monasteries and is confirmed by archaeological finds at the same time.

In the midst of the three Remda villages Altremda , Kirchremda , and Sundremda , in the 12th or 13th century, probably at the instigation of the Counts of Schwarzburg , based on their older castle, the approximately 300 × 300 meter large, walled and moat four corner towers and three gates provided city Remda laid out.

In 1286 and 1288 the civitas and their mayor are mentioned, in 1319 the castle, and in 1367 the city fortifications. In 1362 the town received two annual markets and in 1378 a weekly market . In 1432 the castle, town and rule of Remda became the property of the Counts von Gleichen , in 1633 for the administration and use of the Jena University, which had a paper mill built in 1690 for its own use. After several changes of the Saxon- Ernestine countries, the Remda office came to the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach in 1741 . At that time, the town called Stadtremda had 586 inhabitants, including 62 self-employed craftsmen and several workers in a small stocking factory. The town had three grinding, an oil and a paper mill.

In all centuries of its history, the economic basis of the small town was agriculture in close connection with the local handicrafts and the central local functions for the surrounding villages.

At the end of the Second World War, on April 12 and 13, 1945, American artillery and tank units shelled the city and destroyed the town hall and 19 other residential buildings.

During the GDR era, Remda had missile positions on the Großer Kalmberg, an anti-aircraft missile system of the 51st FRBr of the NVA was stationed there.

On June 20, 1957, Kirchremda was incorporated. Altremda followed on March 1, 1974. Since January 1, 1997, Remda has formed the new town of Remda-Teichel together with Teichel and ten other places . On January 1, 2019, Remda became a district of Rudolstadt as part of the incorporation of Remda-Teichel.

From the old city fortifications from the 14th century, the nine-meter-high tower in the north-west, which was given a new conical roof in 1976, as well as parts of the four-meter-high and up to 1.35-meter thick city wall. Another tower has been restored. The center of Remda is the square market square, from which two streets each extend to the north and south, and another one runs to the west. The narrow small town development is accessed through several narrow streets.
