Nicodemus Lappius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicodemus Lappius (born October 20, 1582 in Remda , Stadtremda in the county of Gleichen , Thuringia ; † November 8, 1663 in Arnstadt in the county of Schwarzburg ) was a Saxon-Coburg court preacher , later superintendent of Arnstadt, Bible translator and professor of Hebrew (Hebraist ), Author of numerous sermons as well as Hebrew and Latin poems.

Life

He attended school in Remda and at the same time received private lessons (he learned Latin and Greek , "he also sang a fine treble "). When his eldest brother left Ohrdruf (he went to Hildesheim ), his father sent him instead of his brother to Ohrdruf to a cousin, the teacher's wife Thäle nee. Eckholt, "zur Kost" (1594 to 1597), where he received private lessons from private tutor Christoph Sperber (later court preacher of the Counts of the same name). When the plague broke out in Erfurt , his brother came back to Ohrdruf from Jena and during this time let Nicodemus teach privately until he could write Latin speeches and poems. His matriculation was in the first half of 1596 at the University of Jena , but he was initially not at the university. In 1600 he became a student of philosophy and languages at the University of Jena and attended the disputation college . He disputed “privately” under Anton Buscher, adjunct of the philosophical faculty, and then publicly under Magister Hölscher (both disputations were printed). Then he began studying theology, which his father was destined to do from the start, but who almost had to force him to do so. He learned Hebrew from Peter Piscator , and Hebrew poems were soon printed by him. He wrote disputations under Johann Gerhard and Piscator. In 1606 he became a master. His work received first place out of twelve candidates (at Dean Sagittarius).

In 1608 he fled from the plague to his parents in Roßla , where he repeated what he had learned and preached. In 1609 he was recommended to Duke Johann Ernst of Sachsen-Eisenach, who wanted him to be pastor in Liebstadt ; but then he came to Weimar as a deacon . After the trial sermon for “Estomihi in the city church”, ordained in February 1610 in Weimar (voc .: February 19, 1610) as hypodiacon in Weimar. There he worked with the deacon Martin Rutilius (a grandson of Martin Luther's secretary Georg Rörer ), with whom he published two funeral sermons in 1611 and whose niece he married in the same year. On the recommendation of Superintendent Ewald in Königsberg , he became pastor in Tann (Rhön) in Fulda Abbey in 1615 (inaugural sermon 7 May 1615). On August 1, 1617, he was appointed court preacher to Duke Johann Casimir von Sachsen-Coburg and professor of the Hebrew language in Coburg , based on an expert report by Johann Gerhard.

However, they did not want to leave him out of Tann, his Junker obtained an expert opinion from Tübingen for this purpose . So he had to stay in the pastor's office despite his calling. In 1618, a noble court lord spoke to the Count of Coburg about it, who then had Lappius and his brother Christoph Lappe ( chancellor in the service of Count Coburg) and Superintendent Mag. Schuccelius come to him. After a trial sermon he was released from Tann with difficulty and on June 29, 1619 a deacon in Arnstadt (on the recommendation of his brother, the chancellor).

His further career was: 1620 archdeacon, 1629 inspector of churches and schools (as successor to Superintendent Schuccelius), 1635 superintendent and pastor in Arnstadt. In 1647 he was portrayed at the age of 64 (after his death this picture was distributed as an engraving). In old age he suffered several strokes in the pulpit and was unable to fully perform his duties for the past three years. After his death his funeral sermon was printed. He was buried on November 10, 1663 in the upper church in Arnstadt with a funeral sermon by Archidiaconus Weber ("Christschuldiges Ehrengemächtniß ...").

Act

Since his earliest student days, he has written poetry, mostly Latin and Hebrew, some of which have appeared in print. He put a lot of sermons into print and was very active as a writer. In 1650 his Agenda Schwarzburgica appeared , a collection of rules for worship in his principality. He was also active as a translator; the letters to the Galatians , Ephesians , Philippians , Colossians , the 1st and 2nd to the Thessalonians , 1st and 2nd to Timothy and to Titus and Philemon in the Weimar Bible are edited by him. According to the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie from 1883, 43 writings by him are known. “ We recognize his activity and his zeal for upholding the pure Lutheran religious doctrine not only from his theological writings on practical theology, but also from those that touch on the history of Schwarzburg and which at that time earned him an important name abroad. “(General German biography, 1883).

Because of the notices from Tübingen he could not accept the appointment to Coburg in 1617 ; after that "everything went back with him". His wife became terminally ill and he had to send her to Karlovy Vary , losing all of his fortune until she died in 1623. Just as he was born “in great dying” in 1582, he endured a lot through the plague . When the prince went to Reinhartsbrunn in autumn 1611 and he had nothing more to preach at court, he had to do so at St. Jacobi and be a plague preacher . In 1625 the plague came to Arnstadt; he stayed there alone with a colleague and continued to preach.

family

He was a son of the financial and asset manager for the Counts of Gleichen , Andreas Lappe († June 10, 1623 in Remda), and Margaretha Scheidemantel (daughter of a citizen in Remda, the former maid of the wife of Count Ludwig zu Gleichen, Mr. zu Blankenhain and Kranichfeld was; † June 16, 1624). His brother was the Secret Council and Chancellor Christoph Lappius in Sondershausen. In his first marriage, Nicodemus Lappius married Anna, the daughter of the Jena baker Martin Rutilius, with whom he had a daughter Magaretha (* Nicolai 1611, married to the council chamberlain Johann Ludwig Froben) on the Sunday after Dreikönige 1611. In his second marriage, on Sunday Trinity 1624 in Arnstadt , he married Catharina Felder, daughter of the “noble citizen” Friederich Felder in Arnstadt, formerly the royal Saxon administrator of Gotha. This marriage lasted 38½ years and had five children - a son and four daughters. Known of these children are:

  • Nicodemus Lappe d. J. (studied medicine), Justina Magaratha Lappe, Catharina Lappe, who died before their father.
  • Cunigunde Catharina Lappe (married to the pastor in Oberndorf and Angelhausen Jacobus Bartholomäi)
  • Anna Lappe (married to the pastor and inspector in Remda M. Samuel Friedrich Born).
