Martin Rutilius (Latinized from Rudel ; born January 21, 1550 in Bad Düben, † January 18, 1618 in Weimar ) was a German Protestant pastor and hymn poet.

Rutilius, was a son of pastor Gregorius Rutilius (Rüdel, Rudell * 1526 in Erfurt, † in Düben) the elder, who was of Bavarian origin, and Anastasia Rörer (daughter of Martin Luther's Bavarian assistant Georg Rörer ). After attending the Torgau Latin School, he enrolled on July 13, 1568 in the matriculation of the University of Wittenberg . In the winter semester of 1572 he was enrolled in the matriculation of the University of Jena free of charge, and on July 20, 1574, he was promoted to a master's degree in philosophical sciences. In 1575 he took up his first pastor's position in Teutleben . In 1586 he became a deacon , later archdeacon in Weimar , where he later promoted the young deacon Nicodemus Lappius , who also worked as a church poet.

Rutilius wrote texts for cantatas and other vocal works. Of his many poems, the song Oh God and Lord, how big and heavy are my many sins ( EG 233), probably composed in 1604 and first printed in 1613, is sung to this day.
