General view of the church

The Christophorus Church is located on the northern outskirts. Your tower is in the middle, in the west and east of the tower the two naves. The original church with tower and the eastern nave was built as a Romanesque fortified church in 10/11. Century built. Around 1370, the most important still preserved Gothic church paintings in Thuringia were created in the Haufelder Church, with scenes from the Bible, symbolic depictions of saints. In 1529 the church became Protestant. In 1762 the church tower was given its present shape and size. The western part of the nave was built in baroque style with a hipped roof . In 1931 the colorful wall paintings under plaster were rediscovered, which were then restored. During the GDR era, the frescoes began to deteriorate rapidly due to water penetrating from above. From 1985 onwards, donations from the residents made it possible to re-cover the tower and replace the roof over the wall paintings. In 1993 there was another extensive restoration of the entire church by the monument preservation department in Erfurt.
