Treppendorf is a district of the city of Rudolstadt in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

Geography and geology

The village is north of Haufeld and is the northernmost district of Rudolstadt. It lies on a trough-shaped high plateau and is bordered to the south and north by wooded limestone mountains. In this area is also the edge of the Thuringian Basin . Neighboring villages are Rittersdorf and Haufeld.

North of the village on Treppendorfer Markung lies the desert of the former village of Markersdorf . The visible remnants of this village are the remains of a former church.

history

The first documentary mention of Treppendorf as Trebunesthorp took place on May 18, 876. This was followed by the names Trappendof and Treppendorf. The place name is derived from the great bustard (a species of bird). The place used to be a market town in the rule of Oberkranichfeld , which belonged to Sachsen-Meiningen as an exclave from 1826 to 1920 .

In April 1945, in the final phase of World War II , American artillery shelling (from Rittersdorf) caused severe damage to the village. The church, the school in their neighborhood and other buildings were hit. In the churchyard you can find the graves of a villager and two Wehrmacht soldiers who died on April 10 and 12, respectively. The church, which was particularly badly affected, was partially rebuilt (the eastern part of the nave reduced). Due to severe damage, the church was extensively renovated from 2001 onwards.

The village has always been characterized by agriculture.

On January 1, 1997, Treppendorf, the towns of Remda and Teichel and nine other places formed the new town of Remda-Teichel . On January 1, 2019, Treppendorf became a district of Rudolstadt as part of the incorporation of Remda-Teichel.
