Markersdorf (Rudolstadt)

Markersdorf is a desert on what is now the Treppendorf mark of the city of Rudolstadt in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

The place is first mentioned in the year 874. Already in 1403 and 1462 the place is described as desolate. However, it was mentioned in 1615 together with Treppendorf as an independent municipality, so it must have been rebuilt. It is unclear why the place fell into desolation again in the 1620s. This may have happened in connection with the Thirty Years War , and French troops were present in the area at the end of the 1620s.

The location of the Markersdorf ruin on a map from the 19th century.

Goethe, then 68, mentions the place in his diaries . On his trip to Heidecksburg Castle on October 10, 1817, he reveals his travel route coming from Tannroda , via Markersdorf and on to Treppendorf.

The only relic still visible today is a meter-high wall of the former church. This has been refurbished, but may be at risk from the construction of new wind turbines at the small wind farm there .
