An abortive egg (molen egg, wind egg) ( medical : ovum abortivum ) is used when the placenta develops but not the embryo ( trophoblast is conditionally capable of development, embryoblast perishes prematurely). Usually an ovular miscarriage follows up to the eighth week of pregnancy. The probability of occurrence is linked to risk factors (smoking, alcohol, vitamin deficiency) and is around 5 percent.

A pregnancy with an abortion is known as a molar pregnancy .
