Preßwitz was a place in today's Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia , which sank in the Hohenwarte reservoir .

history

At today's reservoir of the Saale valley is the "Preßwitzer Spitze", this is a forest area on the Lettersberg , at the same time a peninsula about one kilometer as the crow flies east of the Hohenwarte location . It was named after the place Preßwitz, which was located on the western slope of the Lettersberg and was flooded after the construction of the dam .

"Preßwitz" originally comes from the Sorbian name "breza" and means "birch". The place was first mentioned in 1125. In the course of time it became the name "Preßwitz". Older topographic maps show the place as a street village .

The topographical location was quite unfavorable for the residents, as around 80 percent of the forest, meadow and arable land in the village was on the other side of the Saale . Only in 1902 did the place get a massive bridge. Until 1918, Preßwitz was in the Leutenberg area of the sovereignty of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt . For the purpose of electricity generation, in connection with the function as a drinking water reservoir and flood protection, a plan for the construction of the Saale cascade from several hydropower plants was implemented since the early 1930s . In 1938 the village was evacuated due to the impending flooding. After a final service together, the remaining residents left Preßwitz. Since the flooding, the water at the point where Preßwitz once was has been around 40 meters deep.
