history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1455 and is located on the old trade route from Erfurt to Nuremberg. Once the place belonged to the sovereignty of the Grafschaft Schwarzburg , later to the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt . The place was devastated in the Thirty Years War . The main occupation of the inhabitants was originally in forestry, charcoal burning and pitch boiling. The oil trade was added later as an important branch of the economy. In 1812 375 inhabitants were counted, in 1902 there were 524. In 1923 the Oberweißbacher Bergbahn opened up, with which Lichtenhain was connected to the railway network. Important branches of the modern economy were the glass industry and the manufacture of thermometers, and after the Second World War also increasingly tourism.

The municipality of Lichtenhain / Bergbahn was dissolved on December 1, 2008 and incorporated into the town of Oberweißbach. Until then, the community was part of the Bergbahnregion / Schwarzatal administrative community with its administrative headquarters in Oberweißbach.
