Aviation weather service

Aviation weather services are authorities and companies that are charged with providing meteorological information that is important for flight operations . There are corresponding branches at most international airports .

history

On the occasion of an international air traffic conference in Zurich in October 1929 , a resolution was passed in which the participants committed themselves to the establishment of "expertly managed weather services" for main airfields. The services should be ready by the beginning of the 1931 flying season at the latest and inform and advise pilots. In the case of Switzerland, the federal government took on the training and employment of three meteorologists who were being trained at the Federal Meteorological Institute for the main airports in Basel , Geneva and Zurich . The siting cantons were obliged to provide premises, equipment and auxiliary staff.

Tasks of the aviation weather services

Your job is

  • carry out a weather observation and reporting service adapted to the requirements of aviation ,
  • to advise the aviation personnel in writing and orally and to provide them with flight meteorological information,
  • To transmit weather data to air traffic control , which it needs to secure air traffic and to inform aviation personnel in flight,
  • to carry out continuous flight weather monitoring and issue warnings and
  • To scientifically process aeronautical meteorological questions and to provide flight climatological data.

The detailed operation of meteorological services is subject to the ICAO - standards in Annex 3 which is binding on all Member States ICAO Convention .

Centers and other agencies

The headquarters of the aviation weather services of various countries are usually located near the capital or are affiliated with the most important international airport. The tasks are mostly taken over by (formerly) state authorities or the military .

The meteorological watch offices (MWOs ) are also responsible for the creation and distribution of weather warnings in the defined form of SIGMET , GAMET and AIRMET messages.

In addition to this center there are usually other aviation weather stations, e.g. B. in Austria at the airports of Linz , Salzburg , Innsbruck , Graz and Klagenfurt . In Germany there are meteorological stations at the 16 international airports at which the German air traffic control also has a branch. For these places, better weather forecasts can usually be made than would be possible centrally. They are created with the help of the central databases and Europe-wide forecasts (see Reading in England), from satellite images , local weather observations and the associated local experience and are therefore also more flexible for (partly chargeable) inquiries from other areas such as e.g. B. agriculture , astronomy and insurance .
