AIRMET ( English AIRman’s METeorological Information ) is a weather advisory system for air traffic. Compared to SIGMETs , AIRMETs cover less dangerous weather phenomena and concern safe flight operations below FL245 . AIRMETs are only issued when required.

The flight advice is provided by the aviation weather monitoring center and is valid for six hours. AIRMETs are contained in ATIS messages.

AIRMETs are created for the following weather phenomena:

  • Moderate turbulence ,
  • Moderate mountain waves,
  • Local thunderstorm cells,
  • Risk of icing,
  • Wind at speeds around 30 knots,
  • widely restricted visibility.
