SIGMET is a weather warning system for air traffic. The English acronym SIGMET stands for significant meteorological phenomena (English sig nificant met eorological phenomena ).

The warning of aviation hazards is issued by the aviation weather monitoring center for a specific flight information area (FIR). A warning is given of the imminent or expected occurrence of certain weather phenomena that could impair the safety of aircraft movements; the period of validity is up to four hours. The pilot can receive the SIGMET warning in flight as an air broadcast over specified frequencies or take it into account when planning the flight. SIGMET is issued in English and numbered consecutively for each day, starting at 00:01 UTC . The period of validity is usually four hours. The SIGMET messages are provided by the German Weather Servicecreated, forwarded to air traffic control and then broadcast. In Germany , this is done by the regional control offices of German Air Traffic Control in Bremen , Frankfurt and Munich .
