Wetschaft Depression
The Wetschaft depression is a 5–10 km wide in east-west direction and around 15 km long in north-south direction with a total area of 121.61 km². It is located in the northern district of Marburg-Biedenkopf ( Central Hesse ) in Wetter (in the far north near Battenberg also the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg ) at the interface between Gladenbacher Bergland (western south), Rothaargebirge (west to western north), Burgwald (eastern north and east) ) and Marburg Ridge (south).
In addition to the eponymous river Wetschaft, part of the upper reaches of the Lahn flows through the south of the depression, in the east of which the Wetschaft flows into the Lahn.
Natural allocation
The Wetschaft-Senke is counted as natural area 345.0 to the Burgwald (main unit 345) and thus to the West Hessian mountainous region (main unit group 34):
In particular, however, it is the interface of the actual castle forest to the east with the main units 348 ( Marburg-Gießener Lahntal , in the south), 320 ( Gladenbacher Bergland , west south) and 332 ( East Sauerland mountain range , west to west north).
Here the West Hessian Uplands meet two other main unit groups, both of which are part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains , namely the Süderbergland (33) and the Westerwald (32).
A short section of the Rhine-Weser watershed runs across the north of the valley , to the north of which the valley of the Eder (natural area) runs close to the border.
places
The following districts of the large community of Lahntal are in the Wetschaft depression : Sterzhausen , Goßfelden , Sarnau and Göttingen (each in the extreme south, the Lahn downstream from west to east). Furthermore, all districts of Wetter (south of the center), all districts of Münchhausen (north of the center), Burgwald - Ernsthausen (in the extreme northeast) and parts of the core city of Battenberg together with the districts Frohnhausen , Laisa and Berghofen (in the extreme northwest ) located in the depression.
Limitations
Apart from the Wollenberg, which is surrounded by the Wetschaft depression by 270 °, and a corner of the actual castle forest, which protrudes into the depression in the north, the lateral boundaries largely follow the surrounding mountain ranges in a linear manner.

landscape
While the surrounding mountain ranges are almost completely forested, the Wetschaft Depression is almost forest-free. Large parts of the valley basin are used for agriculture.
Elevations inside
The Wetschaft-Senke is a typical valley basin, but one that is much more rich in relics than z. B. the nearby, comparably large Amöneburg Basin . Overall, the altitude increases to the north.
Distinctive are u. a .:
- Himmelsberg (381 m) - completely cleared mountain in the extreme (western) north near Laisa , Rhine-Weser watershed
- Kainsberg (324 m) - wooded mountain in the north near Wollmar
