Ernsthausen is a district of the Burgwald community in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in northern Hesse .

Geographical location

The place is the southernmost of the five districts of Burgwald, 10 km south of Frankenberg (Eder) and 23 km north of Marburg (Lahn) . The north-western and northern borders form the boundaries of the Burgwald districts of Birkenbringhausen, Wiesenfeld and Bottendorf , the eastern border is the Roda district belonging to Rosenthal (Hesse) . The district boundary in the south and southeast to the Münchhausen districts Münchhausen and Wollmar also marks the district boundary between the districts of Waldeck-Frankenberg and Marburg-Biedenkopf . To the west lies Berghofen, a district of Battenberg (Eder) .

Ernsthausen is located on the western edge of the Burgwald . The Wetschaft and the Senkelbach flow through the village .

history

The first traces of settlement in the area come from the Ice Age, the place of discovery is the Weiboldskopf in the direction of Roda.

The place name goes back to the name of a settlement that was founded under the direction of a man named Ernst. Places with the final syllable -hausen go back to the 9th and 10th centuries, the time of the late Carolingians. Originally, the town center consisted of a few houses that were built along today's Darmstädter Straße in the so-called Öül corner (Eulenecke). The situation in the first few centuries remains in the dark.

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1303. In the certificate, the knight Eckhard von Helfenberg was given half of the tithe in Ernesthusen as a fiefdom for the handover of goods belonging to him in Gasterfeld near Wolfhagen to the Hessian landgrave Heinrich .

In the 14th century, the place came largely under the influence of the Johanniterkommende founded in Wiesenfeld by Counts of Battenberg in the 13th century . After the local noble family died out, the areas became the plaything of the two Hessian regional powers, the Archdiocese of Mainz and the Landgraviate of Hesse , with the latter having the upper hand in the allocation of Wiesenfeld and Ernsthausen.

Territorial reform

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipalities of Birkenbringhausen, Ernsthausen and Wiesenfeld voluntarily merged to form a municipality called Burgwald on July 1, 1971 . For Ernsthausen, as for the other formerly independent municipalities, a local district with a local advisory board and local council was formed.

mayor

Until the incorporation in 1971, the place was politically independent and also had its own mayor. Until 1834 the office was provided by a mayor. The mayors in Ernsthausen were (the house number in brackets):
